Dissolving dermal filler with Hylenex
Hylenex is a brand of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA). It’s used to dissolve dermal fillers made of HA, either for aesthetic correction or emergency treatment.
How does dissolve dermal filler with Hylenex work?
When injected, Hylenex enzymatically breaks down HA molecules.
It starts working within minutes, with full effect usually in 24–72 hours.
It can be used for:
- Overfilled areas
- Lumps or uneven filler
- Vascular compromise (e.g. filler blocking blood flow – urgent use)
Note: It only works on HA-based fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal, etc.), not on Sculptra, Radiesse, or Ellansé.
How do I prepare for a treatment to dissolve dermal filler?
Consultation first – Your provider will assess whether the filler is HA-based and whether dissolving is needed.
No special prep usually needed, but avoid:
- Blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) 2–3 days before
- Alcohol 24 hours before
- Makeup or skincare products
Who can get a dissolve dermal filler treatment?
Let us know if:
- Have allergies (especially to bee stings or animal proteins)
- Have had anaphylaxis or previous reactions to hyaluronidase

Immediately After:
- Monitor for side effects: Some women and men may experience side effects after starting HRT, including breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, or spotting (in women). These side effects are often temporary.
- Keep track of symptoms: Make a note of any changes in your symptoms, either improvements or new side effects, and share them with your healthcare provider during follow-up visits.
Dissolve dermal fillers results timeline
Initial Results:
Most patients notice some improvement within the first 1-2 days as the filler begins to break down, according to Glow Aesthetic Center. Swelling is a common side effect after Hylenex injections, which can mask the initial results.
Complete Dissolution:
The complete dissolution process, leading to final results, usually takes around 2-4 weeks, according to Livara Aesthetics. This is because the body takes time to metabolize and absorb the dissolved filler.
Factors Affecting Timeline:
- Filler Type: Denser, more cross-linked fillers may take longer to dissolve.
- Filler Volume: Larger volumes of filler will take longer to dissolve and may require multiple sessions, says the Cleveland Clinic.
- Individual Response: The body's response to the Hylenex injections can vary, affecting how quickly the filler dissolves.
